Description
This is an old gas station in San Antonio. I've only seen this sign twice - the last time in west Texas. My grandfather was a Texas Panhandle (Amarillo) Oil and Gas pioneer from the 1920's. He was a scout and later head of Gulf Oil's land department in Amarillo. Grandmother didn't like him to drink at home, so after work he and his landman friends would gather to relax with a glass of Bourbon whiskey in the oil patch. His friends were going to form their own company and wanted him as a full partner. He said 'Let me ask the wife'. Grandmother prayed and felt 'NO' was the answer. Grandad joined the army and caught yellow fever. His friends founded Humble Oil Company which went on to be EXXON. It was a good thing - if I had inherited that kind of money I would have died early as I was kind of wild and rebellious for a while as a young man.
